This report is presented to you on behalf of the local 115’s PRC committee. The current PRC committee members for the local are: Nicole Bajada, Wanda Deadman, Kevin Champagne, Laura Muencrath and James Zachary. I would like to acknowledge Sarah Paetschke for her time and commitment while on the committee. The committee wishes you all the best in your future endeavours.
We have received 216 PRC’s to date, which is lower than the amount submitted last year. In an ongoing effort to support and educate front line members of local 115, the committee was successful in obtaining approval from senior site leadership to commence PRC education carts. The committee will start the PRC education during the third week of January 2017.
In an effort to resolve outstanding PRC’s from PCU 26 related to overcapacity and nurse to patient ratios, the local escalated concerns to the CEO designate and a formal presentation was completed. The parties continue to meet with key stakeholders discussing potential resolves.
The local has met with nurses from PCU 42, 51, 52 and the emergency department to hear individual unit concerns. The same message from all our front line staff has been heard, regardless of the unit they work on. Nurses are being asked to do more with less. We have heard many nurses say they feel like the budget bottom line is more important than delivering safe patient care. The morale distress and general frustration can be felt when engaged in general conversations with membership.
To allow the local to continue to support all nurses, we strongly encourage the continued documentation of safety concerns. PRC trending has been an invaluable tool for the local to clearly articulate to the employer why work environments need change.
It is our hope to be able to provide an update on the Joint Committees work outlining agreed upon changes to make PRC process and language meaningful.
The PRC minutes from the monthly meetings are to be posted on each unit. If these are not being posted, please contact the local office at 403 670 9960.
On a personal note, I would like to thank the committee members for their individual dedication and advocacy for patient safety.
