New York State to manadate $15 minimum wage for fast food workers

A panel appointed by New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo today recommended that the minimum wage be raised for employees of fast-food chain restaurants throughout the state to $15 US an hour. Wages would first be raised in New York City and then the rest of the state.

The state minimum wage is now $8.75 per hour, and the increase to take effect by 2018 in New York City and 2020 in the rest of the state will represent a pay increase of mor than 70 per cent.

This is a significantly bigger increase by percentage to the minimum wage than that proposed by Alberta’s NDP government.
