On March 5, CBC Television’s “The Nature of Things” with David Suzuki will be airing a documentary about antibiotics, and we thought your organization might like to know about the program.
“The Antibiotic Hunters” is about the urgent search for new antibiotics. In Canada, up to 12,000 people are dying each year from infections that were once easily cured, because we’ve overused our existing antibiotics and many have lost their effectiveness. Now, scientists are hunting for new antibacterial drugs, in some remote and unusual places.
The hour-long documentary has its world premiere on Thursday, March 5 at 8 pm across Canada (8:30 pm in Newfoundland). It follows drug researchers as they investigate the slimy green fur of sloths, the saliva of Komodo dragons, the blood of alligators, and the bacteria in British Columbia caves and on the ocean floor off the coast of Panama – all part of the urgent hunt to find the building blocks of new antibiotics
