National Nursing Week May 12 – 18, 2014

To all AHS staff, physicians and volunteers,

Nursing Week 2014 focuses on the role nurses play in leading change. Nurses are often at the forefront of exploring and pursuing new ways of caring that improve both the experience for individual patients and the healthcare system as a whole.

AHS has more than 33,000 nurses supporting health service delivery; these numbers include RNs, RPNs, LPNs, NPs, and graduate nurses. Of this number, there are more than 1,000 nurses in formal leadership roles and the majority of these nurses provide frontline leadership. They support staff, lead new initiatives and work every day to ensure the delivery of safe quality health services.

Nursing leadership exists well beyond formal leadership roles. As providers of excellent care, teachers, mentors, coaches, and researchers, nurses demonstrate leadership every day. Nurses play a primary role in leading and uniting teams of health professionals to support collaborative patient-centered care. Nurses are in a pivotal position to influence positive change in the health system for Albertans and are essential to improving the quality of care.

Alberta Health Services has just celebrated its fifth anniversary. Although we have come a long way, there are still challenges and opportunities ahead for our organization. We encourage you to celebrate the nurses in your life. Let them know you appreciate their leadership and their ongoing commitment to patients, their families and the nursing profession.

Our sincere thanks and appreciation.
