HUNDREDS OF NURSES TO LOSE JOBS UNDER SECRETIVE AHS PLAN – NDP
EDMONTON – Today, New Democrat Health critic David Eggen said that Alberta Health Services and the PC government are deliberately misleading Albertans about their plans to eliminate hundreds of nursing jobs in the province.
“We know the PC government can’t be trusted to protect public health care,” said Eggen. “But they shouldn’t be claiming that they’re not planning to lay off any nurses, when their internal documents still show that they are. And they must absolutely stop using deceptive advertising to claim that they are looking to hire more nurses, when they are in reality working to eliminate hundreds of nursing jobs,” said Eggen.
The NDP has obtained internal AHS documents stating that nearly 200 full-time nursing positions across the province are slated for elimination with further cuts planned in the future.
AHS has said this reduction in workers will be completed in two phases of what AHS calls “staff scheduling and transformation.” Eggen says the terms really mean layoffs and reduction in quality of care.
“Instead of strengthening and protecting our health care, AHS and the PCs continue to de-skill our workforce. This plan will remove many talented and highly-trained registered nurses from across the province, meaning reduced levels of care for Albertans.”
The Alberta New Democrats are calling on the PC government to put these layoffs on hold until collective bargaining can be completed with the United Nurses of Alberta.
