I am a registered nurse. I am here to tell you the truth. The Alberta Health Services advertisements that say that only 31 per cent of AHS nurses work full time, are nothing but propaganda to get you, the taxpayers, to believe they are hiring more nurses and that safe, effective patient care is their priority. This is not what is happening.
They say that we don’t work full time. We do! We work full time, overtime, through our break time, need to pee, bladder burst time, Thanksgiving time, Christmas and New Year’s time, weekend, evening and nighttime, wish I was home to tuck the kids into bed time. Nurses work more part time than full time because the mental and physical strain taking care of sick and sometimes dying patients causes extreme burnout and fatigue.
Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do for a living, but AHS needs to stop telling the public that us nurses need to work more. We are stretched to the breaking point. I work four to five days a week, depending on the rotation. That’s full time enough.
AHS can take their dictatorship propaganda methods and stick it up their descending colon. Then they can wait in emergency for a few days to have it removed.
